POWER-UP NIGERIA SUMMIT 2019

Theme: Meeting The Nation’s Power Needs: Challenges & Opportunities

Outlook
With a population of approximately 195million and a yearly % increase of 2.61 million as at 2018, Nigeria’s electricity capacity with available generation hovering around 7,000MW is largely insufficient. The Nigerian Government’s target to achieve a whopping 20GW of electricity by the end of the year 2020 is commendable but not a few are doubtful as to its possibility due to decades of unfulfilled promises. The inability of the Nigerian Electricity Supply Industry (NESI) to attract the required investments across the entire value chain due to acute challenges like the lack of cost reflective tariffs, huge aggregate technical, commercial and collection (ATC&C) losses, gas supply, under-developed transmission infrastructure, corruption and so on are key pointers that raise doubts. According to World Bank reports, only 55% of Nigeria’s growing population receive electricity which at best is erratic. With obviously skyrocketing power demands, the need to re-think the current strategy is very evident if the vision 2020 agenda is to be successfully achieved. Despite immense energy potentials, shocks from the electricity crises in Nigeria continue to stall much needed socio-economic development in Nigeria.

The Guardian is organizing the second edition of its Power summit with the theme: Meeting the Nation’s Power Needs: Issues, Challenges and Opportunities.
The crux of this summit is anchored on pivotal issues that will engender economic development, global competitiveness and quality service delivery through turn-around performance of Nigeria’s power sector.
